 Everything has a price, every debt always comes due, and it's finally time for Patrick to pay his.

This.  Just so much this.  I'm in love, I'm in agony, I'm grieving, I'm elated, I'm soaring, I'm astounded, I'm just...overwhelmed.  I hate that the series is over and I feel that way each time I end a series by this author because they've sucked me in, chewed me up, spat me out, and enjoyed every moment of my torture, it seems, because they do it over and over again.  But honestly, I must love that too because I just keep coming back for more.

Patrick is everything.  He's come a long way and his heart has been maturing and growing and deepening up to this point of reckoning and I can't see any other way this should have gone.  I ache for him and for everything he's gone through and to come out triumphant in some ways and desolate in others is beyond my comprehension or ability to empathize.

And then there's Jono.  He is also everything.  Everything to Patrick, everything Patrick needed, and stunning in a way that was unique to this world and made him unlike any other.  No one else would do, no one else could get into Patrick's heart they way he has and no one else could support him or get him through everything that needed to be done.

There's nothing I didn't love about this story and am profoundly in awe of the world that has been saved and decimated and put through the wringer, for this masterpiece of a series to be written, and for me to be so moved.  I'm not sure anything I can say that would do it justice.  This author has abused and saved this world and the vehicles they chose to break it apart and remake it through their journey toward redemption.

On the Wings of War is a 109k word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Vigil in the Mourning. Reading the first book in the series would be extremely helpful in enjoying this one.

“Because you’ve done enough property damage earlier this year that it’s best to remind people you aren’t the enemy,” SOA Director Setsuna Abuku replied without looking at him as they continued down a corridor in the Pentagon. The military aide escorting them was doing a fine job of pretending not to hear a word they said.

“Chicago was not my fault.”

Setsuna finally deigned to look at him, arching one eyebrow. “The people of Chicago beg to differ.”

“It was months ago. They should be over it by now.”

This was an overall cute story with characters that I wanted to get to know and at the outset it was setting us up for a meet-hate-cute situation that I was all over.  But very quickly it devolved to something a bit more juvenile than endearing.  Once they finally got to the dating portion it was quick and definitely steamy so I was back on board.  But very quickly it became repetitive both in action and being stuck in their head.  The separation was necessary, though I feel the situation was forced by an incredibly unthinking Brett.  As a vet there was a whole lot that I didn't understand with his behavior.  The beginning was amusing and the ending was really, really good, I just got a bit lost in the middle.  3 stars.

Ishago and Finn had a rather auspicious meeting and while it made things interesting and drew me in, there wasn't a whole lot to maintain that interest.  Their interactions felt like words on a page rather than organic and fluid and even Finn's personality couldn't really make up for the dialogue that felt slightly contrived.  The action was reserved for near the end of the book rather than something that built based on multiple events that carried them to that point.  Things would probably have worked better if the confrontation and resolution weren't reserved for the very end.  There could have been quite a lot more build up and anticipation for the end as well as more care given to crafting Ishago.  Finn stole the show as did his familiar and I wish that Ishago would have been as compelling as Finn.  3 stars.

The different types of dragons, the elements of danger and mystery, and the hint of romance combine to make this a very interesting series to dive into.  It didn't all work together and some personality things were a little questionable, but that's only because this story is so short that we don't get a whole lot about any of them.  We have basics and for a start to a series with shorter-length stories I didn't mind too much.  There was enough to draw me in and pique my curiosity.  3.5 stars.

A Crown of Iron & Silver: Soulbound Book 3, Hailey Turner

In a world where nothing is sacred and yet everything is sacred and grudges are long, Patrick finds himself embroiled in yet another Godly tug-of-war.  Old friends are just as prone to secrecy as he is and old enemies are still tossing his world into chaos.  Amidst all the crazy, he and Jono are settling into their bond and finding where true strength really lies.  The gods of a trillion pantheons might not be done screwing with them, but they'll stand their ground together and prove yet again that they'll screw with them right back.

This is a much softer story in the Soulbound world.  Well, there's nothing soft about the battles, the Wild Hunt, the Sluagh, or the vast number of warriors of the fae, but the overtones were ones of all the bonds that can be shared and the complicated emotions that accompany them.  Patrick and Jono are feature characters and yet also take a backseat to bonds in general.  As they settle into their own and grow to appreciate and utilize it fully, the tender aspect of what they can be together as lovers comes forward.  Bonds between parents, children, family, pack...all of them are fought for and are what's at stake if Patrick, Jono, and the Hellraisers fail their missions.

Poor New York.  So many of the paranormal trouble that follows Patrick centers on this particular city and while its had more than its fair share of collateral damage, the biggest battle is taken to another field and it finally gets a little break.  I really thought it fit extremely well, this scene change, and not only gave New York a tiny respite, but also showed that there's nowhere that's immune to the havoc Gods and Ethan can cause.

While not a completely new pantheon in this series, the specific pantheon featured in this story was given center stage with very little crossover from other meddling gods and showed incredible focus as well as integration of all the various threads tangled around Patrick and Jono.  A particular artifact was mentioned in the end of All Souls Near & Nigh and that was the thread picked up here in A Crown of Iron & Silver.  Though I will say that this thread is given zero closure and we're left pretty much exactly where we started, this story gave background, depth, and layers to the series that I believe will be necessary as we move forward.

Kind of like those epic anime that are hundreds of episodes long and then a few times there are side story arcs that are related but not central to the story but can still be considered important, that's more what I'd categorize this story in the whole series so far.  It provided new allies, a growth in their pack and all the immense tension that will come as a result of that, and all the tenderness of deepening feelings.  I'm still crazy addicted to this series and can't get enough of the world that I'm immediately drawn into and all the characters that I've fallen in love with.

All Souls Near and Nigh: Soulbound Book 2, Hailey Turner

So, really, is it possible for Hailey to write something bad?  Maybe too complicated?  Perhaps too convoluted?  Apparently not.  Another book for the win.  Seriously.  Not only has she masterfully added two more pantheons worth of deities, but she also threw in a whole 'nother breed of shifter along with all the other complications inherent in the series itself.  You'd think it would be too much, but somehow, someway, it all weaves together to keep me excited and pouring myself into the story so much that I'm kinda ticked that it's not real.  So yeah, Jono and Patrick for the win...again.

There's a lot more Jono in this book and how he fits into his role with Patrick and as a god pack shifter with a bad-a patron.  While we don't get any deeper into his past yet by establishing him as a willing partner, one who is immensely powerful on his own, we're getting a set-up for a phenomenal pair that won't put up with any bull and will get things done, no matter how difficult the task.  I love the way Jono puts up with everything that is Patrick and all his baggage of the deity varieties.  His well-timed calm and sarcasm are a fantastic match for the snarky, surly, secretly vulnerable mage.

And speaking of the mage, Patrick is hilarious and his take-no-guff attitude never fails to entertain.  I do quite enjoy how he's never threatened by Jono's power, patron, or capabilities.  The way he reluctantly accepts his feelings is also strangely entertaining, mostly because of how he snipes at Jono about them.  While Patrick is an unwilling pawn of many, many gods, he never comes across as merely a puppet, but is powerful in his own right and maintains his own methods for doing their bidding.

This book is a doozy, to say the least.  There are so many elements added that you can easily get lost if you try to skip ahead or get so excited that you read too quickly.  Many of the subtle interactions have ginormous consequences in their world and with all the new puzzle pieces added you have to really pay attention.  At times I had to go back and re-read short sections because I got distracted or tried multitasking and failed at everything, but once I got back on track and sequestered myself in my room after the kids were in bed, I didn't stop until the book was done.  I might have been dead tired the next day because I didn't sleep, but I can honestly say it was worth it.  I didn't even notice that I was tired while reading because the flow of the story just kept moving, kept building.  The climax came and I honestly didn't see it going down like that.  I loved it.  As soon as I get a crack at book three I'm going to start at book one so I can become fully immersed in their world so I miss nothing.  Cannot wait.

A Ferry of Bones and Gold: Soulbound Book 1, Hailey Turner

When you owe a blood debt to gods who see humans as pawns for their own games and retaliations, you're not left with too many options other than to fulfill it the best way you know how.  But for Patrick, he finds that each and every time he comes close to fulfilling that debt the odds are increasingly against him.  With the help of a sexy wolf he's both drawn to and wary of, he'll get the chance to test everything he's made of, everything he could become.  But those tests and trials just might be the death of him.  His past is back to finish what was started in a blood-covered basement and the event that shattered Patrick's world.

Patrick has a lot of guilt and while I wanted his history and the details of the pivotal moments of both his childhood and the Thirty-Day War a lot sooner than we get them, I felt that they came at the right time and were confessed to the right person.  Though I did feel that the reveal was a little tame compared to the events that preceded it.  I'm hoping we get a little more detail about it all and all the intricacies of the gods' meddling in Patrick's upbringing as the series progresses.  We're given a good basic picture of who this man is and why he is the abrasive, seemingly apathetic, and aggravated man we meet so I'm really interested in deepening that understanding.

Jono...there wasn't actually a lot of information about him.  We get quite a few basics, a general set-up for who he is and why he's in a position to be a partner to Patrick, but we get very few instances of his point of view or detailed musings about his past, motivations, and feelings.  I want so much more it's not even funny.  Though I will say that each time we get a chapter from him it felt well-placed and well-timed...I just want more; especially about his past and his relationship with his beast and patron.

There's a solid cast and I have to say my favorite members are the ones that show up right near the very end.  Patrick's old unit steals the show and I hope so hard that they get a lot more page time.  As the story gets more crazy and exciting there are quite a few loose ends, tangents, and events that don't get wrapped up in book one of this series, as is expected.  I'm looking forward to more confrontations with Ethan, seeing more magic, and watching Patrick and Jono navigate their bond.

The writing sucked me in right from the very beginning.  Each time I had to step away (heaven forbid that my kids needed to eat) as soon as I picked the book back up it was like I never left.  Hailey Turner is consistently amazing at creating a vivid story that engages the reader in so many ways.  Intimate moments are tender yet still pack a serious punch, chemistry is palpable, action leaps from the page and makes you read faster to catch up with your increased heart rate, and while each story in a series ends on a slightly open-ended note for both the couple(s) and the plot it's not a cliffhanger or an ending that's just a ploy to get you to purchase the rest of the series.  You're compelled to get the rest of the series because it's just That. Damn. Good.  So it is with the Soulbound series.
