Gay Romance Holiday Collection by [Andrews, Keira]

Eight Nights in December: 4 stars
Both MC's were soft and sweet as was their passion.  It was immature because of their age, but not in the way it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  Both characters had a lot of growing to do and it's clear that they're given the best possible start with foundations of love, good family, and a faith system that provided tradition and community.  I do wish there had been an alternating POV, but Nate's issues and feelings were relatively obvious so I could forgive that.  Theirs was free of any external angst and the internal issues were rectified really quickly by well-meaning family so the overall feel of the story was light and fluffy.  The epilogue was absolutely perfect for them and showed an immense amount of family love, connection, and happiness that would be anything anyone could hope for.

In Case of Emergency: 3.5 stars
With a slow start and an unnecessary amount of meddling and ridiculousness from the would-be boyfriend, this wasn't my favorite of the bunch.  But then things started deepening and progressing between the MC's and then a whole load of sweetness came rushing in and really brought the story to a better place.  I think the demi bit was slightly contrived and simplistically explained, but other than that, the rest of the story flowed well and gave a great sense of connection between the men.  The ending was very sweet and just right for the MC's.

Santa Daddy: 4 stars
This was a cute story that had a lot of steam and I liked it all.  Getting to know both men and seeing how they changed and grew to become better men by the end as well as more settled was an absolute pleasure.  I even liked the interjected thoughts from Eric's perspective that helped Nick to come to terms with all that stretched him beyond his comfort zone.  It was snarky, tempting, and quite amusing at times.  With a couple of solid side characters to add depth and breadth to the story I was completely sold.

Where the Lovelight Gleams: 3 stars
Another family for the win.  These two MC's really need the support of family being stuck in the Hollywood spotlight.  The sexual chemistry between them really works, but the emotional one felt lacking.  I would have liked an alternating POV because there was quite a bit of internal conflict, withheld feelings, aborted sentiments, and rash reactions on both of their parts.  While the ending was very sweet and brought us full-circle, the lead-up was a bit rough and didn't give me the same lovely feelings I got with all the rest of the stories in this collection.

Behemoth: Omega Assassins Club Book 3, Kiki Burrelli

Behemoth: Omega Assassins Club Book Three by [Burrelli, Kiki]

I always love it when those that are perceived as the weak, those that only need protection, show everyone how incredibly bad-A they really are.  In this case, River is one of the best.  Not only is he stellar at his job, well, at least until he chooses Behemoth as a target, but he's honest with himself and knows what he's about.  That knowledge and determination and skill give him an inner strength that so many people lack.

And there's another special place in my heart for the big men that have only a desire to love and protect.  Sure, he might be a cold-blooded assassin, but that doesn't mean there isn't a heart buried down in there somewhere.  Behemoth's strength comes from his desire to put family above himself.  And River too.  When we finally get to see inside his great big heart there's no going back.  From the first moment I glimpsed more I knew he'd be perfect.

The connection between Behemoth and River begins with a more antagonistic side before it morphs into something infinitely dear.  I liked their banter, their confusion, and their boldness.  Combine that with some scorching chemistry and a whole lot of tender feels and you've pretty much got my favorite combination.  But I think it's the trust they have in one another that really sells me on them together.  Yes, Behemoth has a moment where he believes self-sacrifice and a little "bondage" is the right way to go, but once he realizes their futility he trusts River to be his bad-A self.

The relationship progressed well with very little angst and a whole lot of banked passion until one confrontation let it all out.  From that moment on it was clear to River that they were meant for one another.  I liked the clear road in his mind, that no matter the obstacle, he was in it for the long haul.  The drama that brought them together and gave them the most grief was pretty linear in that it made sense and flowed well.  While the villain was a bit cliche in their insanity and their accomplices, it wasn't less interesting because of it, it was just an obvious plot point that was well-written and worked for the story and the characters.

When the dust settles it's clear that there is more for them than just their jobs up to this point.  Together they have a family both in the OAC and in the little one they create.  Their world is one that I'd be interested in reading more of.  I didn't know about this series before this book and I'll definitely be looking into it.

Roxy's Recovery, Kim Breyon

Roxy's Recovery by [Breyon, Kim]

Two men who need the other, but insecurities, a lack of communication, and a little too much passivity threaten to end the best thing either of them could hope to have.  Wonderfully sweet moments with animals, a fair bit of steam, and one emotionally charged outburst give a sedately affectionate and quietly passionate feel to the story.

The romantic progression was very slow, bordering on nonexistent for quite a lot of the story and I can absolutely respect the need to take things slow when trying to have a relationship with someone who is recovering from abuse of any kind.  It didn't work for me in the long run, but the intent was there.

I'm not really sure why the Trinity thing was included.  Unless it was a way to "educate" about being bi, it was completely unnecessary.  And even the "education" was more a defensive, confrontational moment that pretty much came out of the blue based on Trinity's interest in Vaughn and his relationship with Alex.  His comments came off as super defensive and even fujoshi-shaming in his self-described lack of understanding of some women's interest in m/m pairings.  I'm not cool with that by any means.  Add in a judgmental sister that's more about condemning, shaming, bossing, and intervening and I'm pretty much done with most of the female characters in the story.

Another confrontation that came out of left field was the one near the end with Alex's past.  It served a purpose in resolving two big issues, but was an indirect way of dealing with those conflicts.  While it was effective in the end, I guess it's okay, but I just didn't think that was the best way to handle either problem.  It was just too big and yet also way too simple.

Speaking of those issues, I really disliked Alex's treatment of Vaughn when his insecurities and their lack of communication collide.  Since neither man can seem to use words like mature adults, there were bound to be misunderstandings and hurt feelings.  Instead of getting to the point where they do use words, a physical altercation with a third party was used to get everything out in the open.  And the person that ultimately did the "confessing" was, in my opinion, not the person who should have spoken up.  There was a distinct lack of adequate groveling and equal-opportunity confessions.  I found that quite dissatisfying.

But the sweet feels really went a long way to making things not as terrible as I'm making this book sound.  I quite like the author's writing style even if I didn't completely jive with these particular men.  There were some amazingly tender parts and the interactions with all the animals were many of the bright points of this story.  While the title is about one pug in particular, it was through it that the MC's find their own recovery that led to the happy family they've always dreamed of.

But when a strange man waves him down on a stormy night seeking help for his injured dog, Vaughn simply can't refuse.

What could have pushed this kind, hardworking man to the streets, or cast such dark shadows in his otherwise bright blue eyes?

I am an Idaho native who grew up dreaming about traveling the world and writing stories. As a child, I would often spend my spare time curled up with my favorite blanket and a notebook, writing another fairy tale. I never would have guessed those fairy tales would one day grow into gay romances, but that is where my heart led me and I am so glad it did. I write about love because I believe it can happen to anyone, with anyone. I also believe dreams never expire, redemption is possible, and true forgiveness can heal us in ways we never expect. I know firsthand how messy life can get, but as any artist will tell you, a little mess is needed to create something beautiful. That’s why I write, to help others see that anything can be beautiful. Wishing On a Dream: A Snow Globe Christmas Book 2, Michele Notaro

Wishing On a Dream: A Snow Globe Christmas Book 2 by [Notaro, Michele]

From start to finish there was magic everywhere. I enjoyed that it played a central role and to balance it out we got Alaric and Grady who really were ideal partners for one another.

I had no idea what to expect of Alaric, whether he would be the softer embarrassment or tender spot for the cruel father we first opened with or if he would be just as hard as his father. And after centuries locked in the snow globe of a cruel, vindictive witch, I had definitely expected him to be a jaded, hard man. What we were gifted with instead was a soft-hearted man who felt powerless and helpless stuck in an unfair prison. He was tender and sweet where he could have been callous and unfeeling. I loved that surprise.

As a partner for Alaric I think Grady was a good match. He was a little quirky, but so eager and deserving of love and care that he was what Alaric needed. A couple times I thought he was a little immature and dismissive, but those moments were so fleeting that they didn't stick as negative character traits. Grady was a good man on his own and was dealt a hard hand in love so he was ripe for the kind of affection Alaric could provide.

The drama in the story felt pretty focused and I appreciated that. With the exception of a couple other mages that distracted and pulled unnecessary focus at times yet also brought the chance of both healing and complications, the story remained on Alaric and Grady and the turmoil that ultimately brought them together. That that turmoil could tear them apart is where the difficult part of their journey came into play. I wish there had been more research on the part of the MC's and the grimoire or even just a bit more in seeing the thought processes going on so it didn't feel like the waiting was more like time dragging on with a decided lack of tension.

Despite that middle bit that didn't fit the general flow of the story, I quite enjoyed seeing the two men come together and build something uniquely theirs and so very deserved. Finding a life together that worked with the challenges of Alaric's legal and residency issues was something that could have proved unbelievable or difficult, but they navigated this quite well and seeing them blossom together throughout both the calm and the strain was wonderfully sweet. Their story was entertaining and had the feels to back it all up.

Wishing On a Dream: A Snow Globe Christmas Book 2, Michele Notaro

I can’t really complain about my life; I have a job I love and a best friend that fills the void of my nonexistent family, but sometimes I’m lonelier than I like to admit. Especially with the holiday season approaching, I can’t help but wish I had someone special to share it with.
My friend gives me a snow globe with a man and a snowy owl inside, and for some bizarre reason, this man starts showing up every night when I close my eyes. It’s… not real, but I can’t seem to get the guy out of my head. It probably shouldn’t surprise me that my brain conjures up the perfect man in my dreams… well, almost perfect if he’d stop claiming to be a warlock. But the crazy thing is that all of it—that he—feels so real.
When I start falling for the man, the warlock, I can’t help but wish that what we have in my dreams could be a reality. I know it can’t, but at least when I’m asleep, I can be with him—with Alaric.

A Villain for Christmas: A Snow Globe Christmas Book 4, Alice Winters

A Villain for Christmas: A Snow Globe Christmas Book 4 by [Winters, Alice]

I think I died.  Deceased.  Landon has murdered me with his brand of funny and I don't even care.  So much laughing, out loud kine too, that I practically hacked up a lung.  And I'm talkin' leg-kicking, tears-rolling, ab-tastic laughter.  I think I laughed more with Landon than with Felix and I wasn't sure that was possible.  But the best part about all of this is that the story wasn't just die-laughing funny, it had feels, complications, sweetness, and vulnerability.  For me this book has everything, is everything.

The farce of a courtship is so perfect for the characters.  And August's participation in and tolerance of Landon's shenanigans are supremely entertaining.  I love their dynamic because it's the cutest evolution of a middle-school crush amplified by amazing powers and families that live to embarrass them that I could have ever hoped for.  Seriously, "Why did you do everything but talk to me?" is the most apt question in existence for August.

The more dramatic plot elements were believable in the story's world and fit quite well, and though I wouldn't really say it was unique or original, it was tackled in such a way that it felt fresh.  The resolution is a little up in the air because we don't follow every thread to its conclusion, but the story did end in a place that gave a feeling of closure for some things and a bright, open, happy future for others.  I think the level of crazy is just right as it had to match the big personalities and funnier moments without overwhelming them.

All the side characters are fantastic, from the dopey Brandon, the inappropriate Baker, to the vulnerable Lex, and the quietly tortured Nolan.  And with memorable quotes about a hairless cat's gender, how can this not be perfection?  The world was a little confusing at first because it's pretty much the world we live in today, just so many of the humans have powers and achieve notoriety on both sides of the good/evil fence.  That wasn't exactly confusing, it was a little bit more the perception I was trying to read.   All the players were a little hard to keep track of and to keep straight, but not too far into the story I was completely sucked in and figured things out pretty quickly.

It was honestly so very easy to get sucked into this world with the level of funny, feels, and dysfunctional families.  I sped through this story so fast because I just could not put it down and it's already on my favorites and re-read shelves since I'm going to be enjoying this story over and over again.

A Villain for Christmas: A Snow Globe Christmas Book 4, Alice Winters

Despite growing up in a family of villains, I’d rather curl up and read than commit crimes. When I get coerced by my brother into helping him rob a bank, I run into August, my childhood crush—also known as Chrono, the city’s greatest superhero. He’s sexy, sweet, and suddenly he’s asking me to Thanksgiving with his parents. It’s probably because he doesn’t realize that I’m Leviathan, a villain with the power of telekinesis. And I can’t tell him because he’d never forgive me and would stop doing things like cooking for me—wait, maybe that would be a good thing, since he’s a terrible cook. It doesn’t help that my parents think they’re the ultimate villains and won’t stop getting in my way, although they can’t even steal toilet paper without getting caught.

But when real supervillains (not the wannabe kind that I grew up with) start targeting August, I might be forced to show everyone who I truly am: a slightly warped and snarky man who’d really rather read a book than save anything… besides August. I’ll tear this world apart just to get another glimpse of him in those glasses and spandex suit. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep him safe, even though it means exposing my true identity. Luckily, August still cares about me, proving that even a villain and a hero can fall in love. Hopefully, we’ll be able to save the world in time for Christmas

Christmas Riches, H.L. Day

Christmas Riches: An age gap holiday romance by [Day, H.L]

Overall this was a nice story that did have a happy ending and included a lot of sexiness that worked to draw the MC's together. I'm honestly torn because I liked where they ended up and there was a real connection, though it was a difficult one due to external circumstances and internal angst, but there were quite a few things that really, REALLY bothered me about the story.

I definitely didn't like the way the separation played out or the "permission" for other partners during it and the reunion was so very lackluster that it kind of didn't make up for the difficult sacrifice. For all of Tom's "I know my own mind" and "I'll never let you go", he really made a mockery of that because of his own cowardice. Yes, I completely agree that he needed the chance to grow up, but to have so much emphasis on his insistence throughout the first 2/3 of the book regarding his pursuing Aiden and then for Tom to do to Aiden what he did while away was unacceptable. It honestly turned my stomach.

Aiden felt so very Eeyore about almost everything that I had a really hard time connecting with him. His sweetness, understanding, and honest love for Tom made up for that though. It was Tom's actions that made him revert back to his very sad-sack mien. Tom is the kind of brash, sassy, vulnerable, and insecure MC that I kind of like, at least until he blows it by acting his age. I agreed with the decision but his immaturity really showed in how he handled it. I don't think either of them grew in a positive way once things got difficult.

The beginning was interesting and once things really started growing between Aiden and Tom I was actually eager to keep reading. And then Tom made a choice that sent it all careening downhill and I struggled to finish the story. It wasn't a bad story, just really, really not my cup of tea once I hit the 2/3 point.

Opposites might attract. But does that include age?

Christmas comes early for Aiden Malone in the form of a seductive, blue-eyed stranger down on his knees. But a shocking revelation about his new “friend” has him running for the hills and cursing his stupidity before the night is out.

Tom's not prepared to give up that easily. He may be rich where Aiden's poor. Innocent in a way that Aiden isn't. And on the wrong side of twenty. But he's old enough to know what he wants. And that's Aiden. He just needs to persuade the older man to look past his hang-ups about age and wealth.

Lust and prejudice pull Aiden in opposite directions, severely testing his willpower. As Tom's layers begin to peel away, Aiden discovers the younger man's life of privilege may not be all it seems. If Aiden gives in, they could have the sweetest Christmas that either of them has ever tasted.

But Tom's about to shatter their joy with a surprise announcement. Decisions need to be made on both sides. It’s down to Aiden, though, to stay strong and decide whose happiness is more important. His? Or Tom's? Because they can’t have it both ways.

It's possible their relationship won't even last as long as it takes for the snow to melt.

Body Magic: The Triad of Magic Book 2, Macy Blake

Body Magic (The Triad of Magic Book 2) by [Blake, Macy, Dennison, Poppy]
Body Magic: The Triad of Magic Book 2, Macy Blake

Picking up right where we left off, Simon and Gray are still finding their way with new bonds, approaching ceremonies, and a whole lot of unanswered conflict swirling around them.  Though the synopsis makes you think those things will be on the periphery of Cade and Rocky's story, they're not.  It's more like Cade and Rocky fit into the happenings of Mind Magic's continuation in Body Magic.  The events that flow through this story, however, really fit with the flow of the overarching plot and I'm definitely captivated by the overall story.

I like where things are going despite this being a more difficult story because of the more disturbing and questionable events included here.  It's not an easy place where everyone finds themselves with more questions than answers and all kinds of complications that threaten all the good that they do experience.  While I wish we got more introspection, decisiveness, and answer-seeking, we do get magic, bonding, tenderness, and a whole lot of passion.

Cade and Rocky's passion had more of an enemies-to-lovers vibe that sparked in Mind Magic, came to quick blows in Body Magic, and then fizzled just as quickly.  I didn't think there was enough for Cade and Rocky's romance or connection and their particular story ended on a tentative HFN that I wasn't particularly happy about, though it did show promise and reconciliation.

I've got some difficult predictions for the villain and the whole triad of magic issues and I'm eager to see how they compare to the series' reality.  The only romance that got a heavy hand was Gray and Simon as they navigate their bond and find comfort and strength amidst all the crazy that seems to be coming at them from every side.  While I wish we had a better balance between the story and the second couple, I still like where I think we're going and can't wait to dive into Soul Magic.

Murder Aforethought: Cabrini Law Book 2, Parker St. John

Murder Aforethought: A Cabrini Law Novel by [St. John, Parker]

Sometimes you wake up one day and have no idea that this is the day that will change your life forever.  Maksim definitely wasn't expecting the young man that would grow step by step to be his heart, nor was he expecting a whole heap of danger to nip at their heels the entire way.  But Maksim didn't get where he is today by giving up and his tenacity and determination will be what carries him into the life he never knew he wanted despite any and all obstacles, even if one of those obstacles is the very man he wants to share that life with.

Val caught my attention right from the very beginning.  You could so clearly see everything Maksim saw right away, that damaged and vulnerable inside covered under a hard shell.  In their attraction it was very much a case of like calls to like where they both know something of hardship and facades.  To protect the ones they love most they're willing to do and say what's necessary even if no one sees it as valor or anything other than despicable.  What I loved most about both of them is that we got right to their hearts and could see just how much they could provide a safe-haven for one another.

"I've been waiting 42 years for this kind of special." -Maksim

The drama was kinda big, but it actually fit quite well.  It worked well with the mob mentality and while there were a few threads that didn't find a conclusion, I'm almost sure we'll get those with Miguel's story...super excited for that one, by the way.  I can see who his partner will be and I'm really stoked to see how they overcome their pasts to find their future together.  What was included in this story for the drama didn't feel too outlandish or too big to "solve" by the end.

The one big issue I had was something that bothered me in Risk Assessment.  The person that sought out the other for reunion wasn't the one I felt should be the one to make the move.  Both men needed to find their place now that their eyes and hearts have been opened and Val really needed to see how valuable he is as a person, but if the person who did the chasing didn't actually make that move I feel they wouldn't have had another chance to be together.  Self-sacrificing is one thing, but stubborn and a martyr complex is another.  While it all turned out for the best in the end, I just wished the lead up to that moment had gone a little differently.  Overall though, the story was engaging as were the characters and I'm even more invested in the outcomes of everyone at Cabrini Law.

North Pole City Tales 1-3, Charlie Cochet

North Pole City Tales

Mending Noel (North Pole City Tales Book 1)As a start to a series I found this quite confusing with feeling like I was dumped into the middle of a foreign place with no hint or reference to center me.  As a novella-length romance I thought it worked relatively well, albeit a shallow version of what this author is usually capable of creating.  Both elements kind of came together, but there were so many details that got skimmed over or left out completely that I'm sad to say I was a little disappointed.  There are an incredible number of things in this world that are both cute and clever at the same time as being wholly unique.  I had the hardest time connecting to Noel and Time and felt like every aspect of this story was rushed, from their cliche dynamic to the plot that ultimately brought them together there was hardly a moment to settle and let everything meld together into a captivating story.  So while it sounds like I'm not a fan, I can't help but be interested in seeing how the treachery is dealt with, if the world gets more description and context, and if the next couple is capable of capturing my attention.  3 stars.
Mending Noel: North Pole City Tales Book 1, Charlie Cochet

The Heart of Frost (North Pole City Tales Book 2)Where Mending Noel was light on details and context, The Heart of Frost dove deep.  Even with this being in the middle of a long-established relationship, the conflict both surrounding and between Jack and Rudy kept their story interesting and relevant.  I felt their connection and because the story kept the conflict's focus on Jack's power and the consequences of his coldness, it was believable and well-balanced.  There was enough sweetness and steam as well as action and intrigue to make this an incredibly interesting story.  While Jack was incredibly reactionary and a bit on the over-the-top with rash judgments, it didn't detract too much from what the real problem was and it was easier to overlook those eye-roll moments.  The side characters being introduced as well as the overarching plot that ties everything together give us the promise of more excitement and love to come and after this vast improvement from book one, I'm definitely coming back for more.  4 stars.
The Heart of Frost: North Pole City Tales Book 2, Charlie Cochet

The Valor of Vixen (North Pole City Tales Book 3)With where we were left between Vale and Vixen in The Heart of Frost I was expecting something quite different than what we begin with here.  I had such a hard time with Vixen's immaturity and pettiness because it pretty much didn't end until it was almost too late.  There were so many times he could have used introspection or a "come to Jesus" moment on himself to move beyond himself instead of using guilt and the climax to push him into becoming who he should be.  He definitely redeemed himself in the end, but it was a struggle to watch him get there.  Vale was a quiet character that faded into the background a little too much, but he really was the perfect partner for Vixen.  The very end gives us an incredible moment that bodes well for more from this series so even though this was not a stunning continuation from The Heart of Frost, I will be back to see where we go from here.  3 stars.

Rise & Fall: THIRDS Book 4, Charlie Cochet

Rise & Fall (THIRDS Book 4) by [Cochet, Charlie]

And now that we're finally getting some resolution, Dex goes off the deep end.  Is that bad?  Not totally, but I wish this had the power of the first book.  What I truly enjoyed was the evolution of the characters, that we're getting some of the shifter awesomeness in relation to claiming, and the elusive baddie is finally getting some page time.

Dex takes a drastic turn from the happy-go-lucky ridiculousness that we've come to know, love, and expect and has a whole slew of issues to work out all while Sloan is forced to sit on the sidelines and wonder what has consumed his partner.  I'm of two minds about this change.  I like the deeper, more complicated feelings we're getting with Dex, that he's not just a caricature or used as comic relief.  That really should have been more developed instead of one confrontational slap in the face.  That's the other side of the coin for me.  To have something so emotionally challenging be the driving force behind his actions thrown out there and not fully fleshed out was a disappointment.  Add in Dex's single-minded focus on being reckless and irresponsible and I'm wondering if the culmination is enough to free him.

Sloan is another story.  He struggled in a different way and we finally get absolutely everything from him.  For him to become the true partner Dex needs and deserves he had to come clean about everything and to lay it all on the line.  I'm so, so glad we got to this point!  How it plays out is equal parts frustrating, sexy as all get out, and so very tender.  I wish it weren't delivered in long emotional monologues, but I really liked that he finally put as much effort into the relationship as Dex has over the course of their journey.

So then there's the side characters.  The soap opera that ensues in this story is a bit overboard, I must say, and while it gives a lot of foundation for a few other stories that are coming, it really is so ... drama.  It feels a bit like high school, in fact, with feeling denials, hesitations, sexually-charged reactions, jealousy, and a good dose of immature pettiness.  I can't say I liked how everything was tossed into this one story when there's already so much good and bad going on with Dex, Dex and Sloan, and Team Alpha and Hogan.  It felt like a little too much to pack in here.

But even though I have issues with what's in the story, it's an overall feeling of "finally!!" and "wow..." that keep me coming back.  I'm glad we're going to take a break from the Dex and Sloan show so we can get some answers about a few other couples.  While I think it'd be good to fully wrap things with Sloan and Dex, I'm getting a little ... bored? ... with them.  Not that they're boring, just that it's now four books in and we're finally to a point where I'm seeing stability for them.  Some series can pull off that delayed pay-off, but in this one I feel like we could have had it earlier and it would have been preferable because there's so much other stuff going on that their emotional evolution was dragged out far too long.  I need a bit of a break from them as a couple driving the story and need a little fresh meat.  A Cael and Ash show is just what I think I need.

A Christmas Wedding: Rory & Jack Book 3, A E Ryecart

A Christmas Wedding: A snowy London love story (Rory & Jack Book 3) by [Ryecart, A E]

What began as a tender and tame story of finding the person meant to open the way from painful past experiences to contentment and love has now become a healing journey of finding a heart's true home and all the crazy complications that go along with that.  Carving out your own forever isn't all cupcakes and rainbows, especially when stronger personalities get in the mix.  Seeing Jack and Rory not only forge a stronger bond together, but also find their ideal balance was a perfect way to continue their story.

Rory and Jack have come a long way and all the steam we didn't get on their first Christmas is here in spades.  In that department they never have any issues.  I did find that the issues they did have mostly revolved around Rory's insecurities.  Yes, his struggle with the wedding plans were there, but that was a minor issue when compared to his near constant comparisons of his upbringing versus Jack's.

 A Christmas Wedding: Rory & Jack Book 3, A E Ryecart

There was a surprise bit in there that really helped Rory to come to terms with everything and while I thought it was pretty appropriate for his part in the story, I kind of found it to be a bit ... sappy?  I don't know how to adequately describe how I felt about that meeting, but I suppose it ended fine because it gave both closure and opened a future connection that had been missing in Rory's life until now.  I just felt like it was used to "heal" him rather than him finding a way to give himself the eye-opening realization he needed to see the truth of his connection with Jack rather than the trappings that were an issue from the very start of their relationship.

Coming around full-circle to the holiday that brought them together, this was a very sweet story that shows how important love is, that without it it wouldn't matter how beautiful the season, how tacky the trimmings, or how sweet the frosting.  What mattered most to Rory and Jack were the simple things that gave their love uniqueness and longevity.  Communication was still a bit of an issue along with a few other bumps along their road, but their love and commitment smoothed them all out and gave them the fortitude to build a very sweet life together.

I love all kinds of MM romance and gay fiction, but I especially like contemporary stories. Born and raised in London, the city is part of my DNA so I like to set many of my stories in and around present-day London, providing the perfect, metropolitan backdrop to the main action. The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings: Black and Blue Book 1, Lily Morton

The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings (A Black and Blue Novel Book 1) by [Morton, Lily]
The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings: Black and Blue Book 1, Lily Morton

Absolutely absorbing right from the very beginning!!  I seriously couldn't put the book down.  There was interest from the characters to the ghost to the story surrounding everything...I just enjoyed it all.  Well, almost all, but the awkward/dismissive interactions between Blue and Levi during their beginning was quickly forgiven when they actually started working together and progressing.  And while I admit that the supernatural element was a little heavy-handed at times and was resolved with fireworks and a fizzle, I liked everything else about the story so much that I was definitely willing to forgive those things.

Levi is adorably awkward and a little bit of an "ugly duckling" in the sense that he doesn't know how wonderful he is.  His heart is quite large and giving and was the perfect thing to make a home for Blue.  His generosity and honesty gave Blue the stability he needed to find freedom from his past and a belief in a happier future.

There were quite a few moments where the crazy seemed to disappear which gave the narrative a chance to focus on all the sweetness and stealth cuddling between Levi and Blue.  Their relationship grew alongside the more spectral aspects of the story and while they could have blended a little more fluidly, I liked how each element played out on their own.  The ending was really the best and most appropriate that could have been written for the men.  I'm incredibly glad we got the HFN we did, that there's so much more growth each person needs on their own and together that to wrap it up quickly to give us an HEA would be a poor way to follow up such a great story.  While I'm usually HFN-averse, what I like about this one is that it's, as I said before, the ideal way to go for where each person is at the time the story ends, and it's incredibly sweet and hopeful so it's not like a cliffhanger or an unsatisfying place to leave them.  If you didn't continue with the series from here it would be okay, though I wouldn't advise it because the guys were just so awesome, but the promise of an HEA could be considered enough.

With compelling men, a great story, and an interesting addition of the supernatural, this series is shaping up to be something absolutely memorable and I'm in for wherever this roller coaster takes us.

Talk to Me: Sloan Brothers Book 1, D.K. Sutton

Talk to Me (Sloan Brothers Book 1) by [Sutton, D. K.]

Chase and Max were good for one another, but only when Chase let his guard down and stopped jumping to conclusions and when Max pulled up his big boy pants and learned to sincerely apologize without feeling unjustly inferior.  Once they did that they had a clearly wonderful connection.

It took a while for me to really sink into the story because there were quite a few moments that made me pause.  Anxiety is no joke at all, but I have to wonder how much Chase was doing to find acceptable coping strategies beyond verging on a shut-in when things would get bad.  He was judgmental, defensive, and insecure.  None of that had anything really to do with his anxiety.  I have family with anxiety and a myriad other conditions so this is in no way shaming anyone, it's just a comment on how little Chase did to manage his issues.  His reactions to people based on his past relationship with a self-centered extrovert were absolutely understandable, it was just going too far and preemptively judging others before he did any self-reflection to see how he could create a better life for himself without the crutch of a possibly unreliable partner.

Max's childishness wasn't unlikable, it was just too much at times.  The fallout of his actions was absolutely predictable and seemed unimaginative.  It wasn't bad or even poorly written, I just wasn't thrilled by how it played out.

Overall though, this story had lovely sweet moments.  If there were more depth and less of the back-and-forth that spent way too long on inner monologues and over-analyzing their situation I would have truly enjoyed this story a lot more.  What we were given was a good start and I'm hoping the next story improves on the relatively good bones we have in this story.

I'm also interested in the short story that features the other surprise workplace couple we caught a glimpse of.  From what I understand, if you sign up for the author's newsletter you can read their story?

Max
Chase Corrigan is the competition and the reason I can’t sleep at night. How does he beat my customer service numbers—and get the bonus—every month? We’re complete opposites. I’m a people person, and he avoids everyone. Sure, he’s gorgeous with long blond hair and icicle-blue eyes, but I like my guys a little more thawed out. I’m determined to take him down.

All that changes when my plan backfires. I get to know the real Chase and realize why he’s so private. I can’t stop thinking about him. The problem? I’m a casual-type of guy. And Chase Corrigan has serious written all over him.
Chase
Maxwell Sloan is everything I detest in a man. He’s loud, obnoxious, and way too full of himself. He loves being the center of attention, while I just want to be left alone. I’m not competitive, but I enjoy beating Max out of the top spot each month. It also makes me his favorite target.

When Max and I are thrown together on a work project, I want to throttle him. He makes me so angry—and more alive than I’ve felt in a long time. But I’ve been with men like Max before, and I’ll never put myself in that position again. If only my heart would listen.
