Being dumped for your best friend is never easy, but when it's compounded by a bit of a lie to save your pride? Jack's in for a lonely, disappointing, and embarrassing holiday season if he can't figure something out. Except a lumpy present on his doorstep might just be the answer he needs. Rory is incredibly down on his luck until he finds himself on the stoop of someone who might be able to turn all his woe into something warm and lasting. But if neither of them find the courage to lay bare what's in their hearts, it might not last beyond Christmas when their charade is at an end.
We get more from Jack in this story and it's relatively easy to get to know him and why he is the way he is. I think his transformation is the greatest because he goes through so much change from what he wants for his future, what he does with his present, and how his eyes are opened to his past. Rory is a breath of fresh air with his innocence, goodness, and adaptability. Despite only being a few years younger than Jack he feels so much younger because of his wide-eyed vulnerability and yet his upbringing gives him depth in order to be the partner Jack could need for his best happily ever after.
The story moved along at a really easy but continual pace that felt right for both the characters and what their situation necessitated. While I would have liked more of them getting together, it ended in such a happy, hopeful place that not only matched the title, but it was such a sweet short story that it was okay to end where it did. Both men suffered a lot before they found one another and while each of them were reluctant to risk rejection, they eventually got on the same page and it was worth the wait to watch them each come into their own and see how they could possibly fit together.
